You’ve done everything right — you’ve done the deep research to know your topic forwards and back, you’ve crafted a thorough article with the power of human imagination (not AI!), and you’ve proofread the piece to a sparkling polish. And yet, after all that, some detection tool may still be trying to give AI all the credit. What gives?
Let’s explore why this can happen and how you can hopefully avoid this again in the future.
How Do AI Checkers Work?
Before we can explore potential fixes, however, we need to understand how AI checkers work in the first place.
The actual technological process is rather complicated, yet it’s pretty straightforward from our outside perspective. Detection tools scan through written works and analyze them, utilizing machine learning models and natural language processing to look for metadata traces alongside certain writing patterns and characteristics.
Two of the most important include perplexity and burstiness — or, in plainer terms, how predictable or varied your piece is.
Sentence structure, repetition, even your phrasing and basic vocab choices all factor in, helping these detection tools decide how “human” you sound.
Why Human-Written Articles Get Wrongfully Flagged
Therein lies the problem. There is no one, hundred, or even a thousand ways to “sound human.”
While some of us naturally vary our sentence lengths, use language in interesting ways, and avoid repetition like it’s a creative plague, not all of us do. Nor do all of us do so all the time. Sometimes, what we write might sound boring, bland, matter-of-fact. That can send detectors’ alarm bells ringing and result in getting wrongfully flagged as AI.
Indeed, these false positives are more common than you might expect. AI detectors like Grammarly’s AI Checker and GPTZero even include disclaimers about how inaccurate and unreliable they can be right on their websites!
Write too formally? Take a very formulaic approach to structure? Use too many common phrases or sound too authoritative? You could run into problems even when your content is 100% original.
Tips to Avoid AI False Positives
If you’ve had these issues yourself, you’re not alone. Tons of other writers (myself included) have experienced the exact same every now and again. The good news, though: there are some steps you can take to help avoid these false positives and the unfair penalties that come with them!
- Don’t be afraid to inject some personality into your work. Of course, don’t be too casual about it, but professionality does not have to equal being overly formal or stiff. Play around with style. Use language that actually sounds like something you’d say and let your distinct voice shine. That human element truly offers something no AI bot ever could!
- Mix up sentences and word usage. Brevity may be the soul of wit, but variety is essential, especially so if AI checkers are giving you grief. A good mix of long and short sentences with some interesting phrasing peppered throughout will go a long way.
- Be careful about accidental plagiarism. Make your teachers and professors proud. Cite your sources, paraphrase in your own words, and maybe try some light rewrites if things are sounding a bit too familiar.
- Shuffle up article structure. Sometimes it’s not so much what or how you’re saying something, but how it all connects together that doesn’t play so well with AI checkers. If a specific line keeps getting highlighted, shifting it around some may well fix the issue.
It might feel inconvenient, or even simply irritating, to have to reference a checklist just to avoid false flags. However, following these tips helps with navigating this new, often disheartening AI-driven reality we find ourselves in.
Interesting sentences, well-cited sources, and stylistic choices — all of which serve to improve our skills as writers and help us provide our readers and clients with the very best content possible. And that’s something I know we can all get behind.
